Richmond Hill Hotel, Richmond Upon Thames

The Venue

Richmond Hill Hotel as the name suggests stands proud in the heights of this busy Borough town with magnificent views looking down towards the Thames that winds through the centre. A 4-star independently owned 144 bedroom Georgian hotel which was previously three townhouses that have been joined together over the years.

Overview & Scope

The discerning client wanted 67 bedrooms refurbished of varying room types from spacious Suites to Deluxe Doubles, Standard Doubles, Cosy Doubles and a handful of Cosy Singles furnishing on the front facing characterful Georgian wing of the hotel. As always, this client demanded high-quality guest bedroom furniture which also represented good value for money.

The Furnotel project team worked closely with Street Design Partnership (SDP) in Manchester who were employed as the interior designers for this extensive refurbishment, Fitzsimons Project Managers, and also with the principal contractors GPF Lewis who were commissioned for the wider refurbishment works.

The Brief

The client and SDP design team wanted the hotel bedrooms to be in keeping with the Georgian architecture whilst retaining clean lines and a contemporary colour palette with a sense of tranquillity.

Following a vigorous tender process, Furnotel was chosen as the preferred supplier to manufacture and install all fitted and freestanding wardrobes, headboards, amenity units, bed bases, bedside tables, breakfast tables and desks for all 67 guest bedrooms.

Hotel Bedroom Furniture Design

The colour palette for the hotel bedrooms was silvery grey neutral tones to make the rooms feel as spacious as possible with powder and pacific blue upholsteries being the pop of colour within this Georgian scheme. The suites were denoted by their spacious footprint and embellished with additional amenity units with antique brass handles and a four-poster super king bed frame painted in turquoise blue.

All hotel bedroom wardrobes were constructed from tulipwood and painted in a classic light taupe with elegant cornice detail and integral strip lighting. Features within some of the wardrobe designs included antique mirrored glass which also housed the mini bar and tea and coffee tray along with compartments for an iron and ironing board.

In contrast to the hotel bedroom wardrobes, French Empire style desks complemented the scheme. The hotel bedroom desks were stained in dark walnut and manufactured with tapered legs and antique brass metal detailing to the feet.

Georgian Style Desk & Bedside in Dark Stain

A mixture of dark walnut stained round, square and rectangular coffee tables were used throughout the hotel bedrooms, with an eclectic mix of tapered, straight and turned leg details.

The bedside tables were stained to collectively match the darker cabinetry items in the room and accentuated with typically Georgian style pull handles to the drawers.

The client was delighted with the quality and characteristics of the hotel bedroom furniture which brought the overall interior design scheme together. Early hotel guest feedback was extremely complimentary.

Installation

The historic nature of the building was that corridors and stairwells were particularly narrow and challenging for furniture installation. The hotel bedroom furniture had to be delivered part assembled or was fully assembled onsite within the bedrooms themselves to overcome this.

An extensive site survey was required by the installation team at Furnotel to ensure that furniture fit neatly into alcoves, and around deep skirtings and architraves.

The project involved a lot of “scribing” to install the furniture snuggly within the hotel bedrooms as the old walls were rarely straight and Furnotel’s skilled fitters needed all of their years of experience to deliver a high-quality finish.
